Croatia has made tremendous strides in winemaking, progress perhaps unmatched by any other European wine nation. It was therefore a source of great satisfaction when our judges named this exciting Plavac Mali from the Dalmatian island of Hvar this year’s champion. Wines like this typically originate from vineyards in extreme locations, steep slopes facing the shimmering Adriatic. So, if you are looking for fresh, low-alcohol red wines, look elsewhere. But if you prefer rich, warm wines, you will delight in the 2021 Plaža Plavac from the Marijan winery. Decanter described this Hvar Plavac as featuring blackberry and black cherry flavors, with notes of fig, sage, and thyme, all balanced by magnificent soft tannins, peppery depth, and restrained acidity.
